Stop Saving the Good Stuff: Time to Use Your Fine China, Silk Blouses, and That Bottle of Bordeaux

If you’re a woman over 50, I bet your cabinets and closets hold treasures that rarely see the light of day. The “good” china your mother gave you. The cashmere sweater you bought on a whim but only wear “if it’s fancy enough.” That bottle of wine you’ve been saving for the perfect occasion that never quite arrives. Sound familiar?
We tell ourselves we’re being responsible. Practical. We’re saving it. But the truth is, too often these beautiful things sit unused until they’re passed down—or worse, donated or discarded—still in their original packaging, never truly loved.

The Trap of “Someday”
It starts innocently enough. Life gets busy. The kids are home, then suddenly they’re not. Work demands focus. We gain a few pounds, or the world feels too chaotic for “special” things. So the good stuff waits.
• The fine china stays in the hutch because “everyday dishes are fine.”
• The elegant clothes hang in the back of the closet, waiting for a wedding or cruise that keeps getting postponed.
• The crystal glasses collect dust.
• The expensive perfume or skincare stays sealed “just in case.”
We’ve internalized this idea that joy must be earned through perfect circumstances. But here’s what I’ve learned (and what many women in our generation are waking up to): life IS the special occasion.
Why We Need to Use the Good Stuff Now
1. It Brings Daily Joy
Eating off beautiful plates doesn’t require a holiday. Pouring a glass of that good wine on a random Tuesday while you watch the sunset or read a book can turn an ordinary evening into something memorable. Small luxuries compound into a richer life.
2. Memories Are Made in the Using
Your children and grandchildren don’t want pristine, unused heirlooms. They want stories. “This is the china your grandmother used every Sunday for family dinners.” “This scarf? She wore it to my graduation and hugged me in it.” Items that have been lived with carry warmth and history.
3. Things Don’t Improve with Age (Most of the Time)
China can yellow or chip from disuse. Wine can go bad. Clothes can go out of style or get moth-eaten. That special outfit you’re saving might not fit the same way in five years—or you might not feel as confident wearing it. Use it while it (and you) still feel fabulous.
4. It’s a Form of Self-Worth
Saving everything “for company” sends a quiet message that everyday you isn’t worthy of the best. You are the company. You’ve raised families, built careers, navigated challenges, and shown up for everyone else. Treat yourself accordingly.
Practical Ways to Start Using the Good Stuff
• Rotate it in. Use the fine china for your morning coffee or a simple weeknight dinner. I love sparkling waters in a special wine glass. Mix and match with everyday pieces so it doesn’t feel too formal.
• Wear the clothes. Style that silk blouse with jeans for lunch with friends. Put on the good earrings for a trip to the grocery. Take photos—you’ll love looking back on them.
• Open the wine. Host a small gathering of women your age and share a bottle (or two). Or enjoy a glass solo with a piece of really good chocolate.
• Create new traditions. Declare “Fancy Fridays” where you set a beautiful table. Or start a “Good Stuff Supper Club” with friends.
• Repurpose with love. If something truly no longer fits your life, sell it, gift it to someone who will use it now, or transform it (turn a special dress into a pillow or scarf, for example).
A Gentle Challenge
This week, pick one piece of “good stuff” and use it. Take it out of the cabinet or closet. Wear it. Serve with it. Enjoy it. Notice how it feels. I suspect you’ll feel a little lighter, a little more present, and a lot more alive.
Life is not a dress rehearsal. The good stuff was never meant to be saved for someday—it was meant for you, right now.
What’s one item you’ve been saving that you’re going to use this week? I’d love to hear in the comments. Let’s cheer each other on.
With love and a raised (good) glass,
Joy
Feel free to share this post with friends who need the reminder. You deserve the good stuff—today. 💕
